SEOUL, March 2 (Yonhap) — Actor Lee Min-ho, actress Song Hye-kyo and boy band EXO have been chosen as the most popular “hallyu” stars of 2016, a survey showed Thursday.
Soompi, a U.S.-based online news provider specializing in Korean pop culture, announced the winners of the 12th annual Soompi Awards elected in a vote by hallyu fans from 139 countries around the world. Hallyu refers to the global boom of Korean pop music, TV dramas and films.
n the vote, Lee was named Actor of the Year, beating the “Descendants of the Sun” hero Song Joong-ki and Park Bo-gum of “Love in the Moonlight.”
Song Hye-kyo won in the Actress of the Year category over singer-actress Yoona from Girls’ Generation who starred in the tvN drama series “The K2.”
The Artist of the Year and Best Male Group went to EXO, which made big hit on music charts with “Lotto,” “Lucky One,” “Monster” and “For Life.” The runner-up in the Artist of the Year category was BTS (Bangtan Boys) who won Album of the Year for its second LP “Wings” and Song of the Year for its lead track “Blood, Sweat & Tears.”
TWICE, the girl group that gained huge popularity for “Cheer Up” and “TT,” was named Best Female Group.
Best Male Solo and Best Female Solo went to Taemin of the boy group SHINee and Taeyeon of Girls’ Generation.

BTS, EXO, Lee Min Ho, 'Legend Of The Blue Sea' Receive Top Honors From 12th Annual Soompi Awards
Some of South Korea's talented celebrities including a few highly-rated TV productions were named the winners during the 12th Annual Soompi Awards. On the Kpop side, the boy bands BTS and EXO brought home some of the major awards, while on the drama side, Lee Min Ho and his mermaid drama "Legend of the Blue Sea" were declared champions in specific categories.
The 12th Annual Soompi Awards recently handed out trophies to several South Korean stars and hit dramas. In a month-long online voting process participated by global fans from around 139 countries, avid Kpop and Krama lovers chose the winners in several award categories, according to Soompi.
EXO nabbed two honors from the Soompi Awards, namely Best Male Group and Artist of the Year. The seven-member group BTS received Song of the Year and Album of the Year for their "Blood Sweat and Tears" and "Wings," respectively. For the Best Female Group, fans chose TWICE while BLACKPINK was named Rookie of the Year.
Other Kpop winners included Taeyeon and Taemin who brought home the Best Female and Male Solo awards, respectively. Zico was awarded Best Hip-hop/R&B Artist, while GOT7 nabbed the Best Choreography and FUSE Music Video Award for "Hard Carry."
Meanwhile, the fantasy series "Legend of the Blue Sea" was chosen as the Drama of the Year, besting other series such as "Doctors," "Love in the Moonlight," "Reply 1988," "Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim," "Scarlet Heart: Ryeo," "Signal," "W-Two Worlds," "Uncontrollably Fond," "Descendants of the Sun" and others. Lee Min Ho was also named Actor of the Year, while the actor and Jun Ji Hyun was declared Spotton's Best Couple in a drama series.
The global hit "Descendants of the Sun" was identified as the drama with the Best Kiss scene, while its lead star Song Hye Kyo nabbed the Soompi Awards' Actress of the Year. The onscreen chemistry between the drama's two male actors Song Joong Ki and Jin Goo was even chosen by fans as the Best Bromance.
Meanwhile, Lee Min Ho also made it to the list of South Korean stars with high brand reputation levels for the month of February. The "Legend of the Blue Sea" nabbed a spot on the said index's top 10 list, according to data from the Korea Business Reputation Research Institute, as cited by Korea Herald.
At first place is the "Goblin" actor Gong Yoo, followed by his co-star Kim Go Eun and "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" actress Park Bo Young. Other celebrities on the list included Song Joong Ki, singer Taeyeon, Hyun Bin, as well as Big Bang leader G-Dragon.
Lee Min Ho's mermaid drama "Legend of the Blue Sea" received double-digit TV ratings during its two-month broadcast. The said drama completed its 20-episode run on Jan. 25.

Lee Min Ho, Song Hye Kyo and EXO engage 2016 Hallyu fans
Lee Min-ho, Song Hye-kyo and EXO are the stars that gained the most Hallyu fans last year.
The list for the 12th Soompi Awards was released. This event decides its winners according to votes of Hallyu fans all over the world.
The most competing part of the Soompi Awards was 'Artist of the Year'. Girl group Twice was tough competition. The result was EXO for their continuous hit songs "Lotto", "Lucky One" Monster" and "For Life".
Bangtan Boys came in second. Their songs were defeated by EXO but they were shoulder to shoulder in fan votes. The album 'Wings' and its songs "Blood, Sweat and Tears" was nominated for "This Year's Album" and "This Year's Song".
Twice came in third with "Cheer Up" and "TT". They didn't make it to "Artist of the Year" but they were honored by being called the Best Girl Group. Got7 was nominated for Best Choreography, Best Music Video and Best Fandom.
Lee Min-ho was nominated for Best Actor in K Dramas. Song Joong-ki and Park Bo-geom were nominees but Lee Min-ho won as he is more globally famous.
Lee Min-ho has become the face of KBS as he's starred in "Boys over Flowers", "City Hunter", "The Heirs" and more. It wasn't easy for him to out-win Park Bo-geom but his global fandom helped him excel.
Second Lee Jong-suk from "W" and Ji Chang-wook from "The K2". They have managed to stay in the Top 10 ranking of K drama actors.
Song Hye-kyo was announced the Actress of the Year. Second came Yoona who starred in "The K2".
Meanwhile, the Soompi Awards presents awards to those stars who stood out in the whole of last year. Fans from all over the world participate in voting for about 2 to 3 weeks at the end and beginning of the years. This year, about one hundred million fans participated.
